Climate Action Plan

Sakarya University's Climate Action Plan includes various strategies and practices in line with the university's sustainability goals. Our university aims to be carbon neutral by 2053, in line with the Paris Agreement and Turkey's climate goals. Here are some important points about Sakarya University's climate action plan:

  1. Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: Encourage all units to develop energy-efficient solutions, renewable energy sources (hydroelectric, solar, and wind energy), and industry partnerships. Key strategies and initiatives include the implementation of energy efficiency measurements, building standards, renewable energy integration, and smart energy management.
  2. Waste Management: Collaborate with the Zero Waste Coordination Office to increase efforts to reduce waste, particularly paper, plastic cups, and bottles. Key strategies are preventing and reducing waste, increasing the recycling and recovery rate, developing human resources, and increasing social awareness within the scope of zero waste practices and greenhouse gas emission reduction.
  3. Water Efficiency: Our primary goal is to adopt water-saving measures on campus and collaborate with universities, industry, and local governments to improve water efficiency. Strategies include preventing and reducing wastewater, improving wastewater management and treatment infrastructure, rainwater management, and leak detection and repair.
  4. Transportation: Despite challenges from the campus's topography and winter conditions, efforts will be made to promote electric bicycles and pedestrian transportation, especially during the spring months, and collaborate with local governments to enhance infrastructure.
  5. Buildings and Infrastructure: Prioritize environmentally friendly design in new buildings and improve energy and water efficiency in existing ones.
  6. Ecosystems and Biodiversity: The basic strategies for sustainable campus landscaping, along with the research and protection of ecosystems, include native and drought-resistant landscapes, green area planning, and pollution prevention. Forests help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Developing green spaces on campus and planting drought-resistant species will help reduce water use and emissions.
  7. Education and Research: Conduct educational programs on sustainability and climate change to create awareness and encourage behavioral changes among students and staff. Develop research projects to improve campus operations.

The successful implementation of these initiatives and efforts toward the carbon neutrality target on SAU campuses will necessitate collaborative efforts from all university units, academic/administrative staff, and students.
