Sakarya University implements a comprehensive institutional policy to minimise the use of disposable materials across all campuses as part of its Zero Waste Management System and overarching Sustainability Strategy. The policy is coordinated by the Zero Waste Coordinatorship under the Sustainability Commission and is fully aligned with the Zero Waste Regulation issued by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, the National Circular Economy Action Plan (2024–2030), and Türkiye’s Green Development Vision 2053.
The University’s approach focuses on preventing waste generation at the source and replacing single-use products with durable, reusable, or biodegradable alternatives. Within this framework, plastic cups, plates, and cutlery have been completely phased out in all cafeterias, tea rooms, and dining areas. Meals are served exclusively on porcelain plates with metal utensils, and disposable containers are prohibited. These standards are contractually embedded in catering and cleaning service agreements, ensuring that waste prevention is an institutional responsibility rather than a voluntary action.
To further reduce disposable consumption, the use of refillable water stations and drinking fountains across all campuses is encouraged, aiming to decrease reliance on bottled water and single-use cups. The University also promotes the use of personal thermoses, mugs, and reusable bottles by offering discounts in canteens and cafés, fostering sustainable daily habits among students and staff. During institutional events and academic ceremonies, reusable tableware, eco-friendly decorations, and university-branded cloth bags are preferred instead of single-use plastic or paper items.
Procurement and supply processes are guided by sustainability principles, with an emphasis on products featuring recyclable packaging or extended life cycles. Suppliers are encouraged to prioritise environmentally friendly and concentrated cleaning products that help reduce plastic packaging waste.
Educational and awareness activities reinforce these operational measures. The Zero Waste Coordinatorship and the Department of Environmental Engineering organise regular seminars, training sessions, and student campaigns on sustainable consumption, zero waste management, and behavioural change related to disposable materials. Student organisations host reuse-themed competitions and repair and redesign workshops, transforming theoretical sustainability concepts into practical community engagement.
All data on waste generation and reduction, including the use of disposable materials, are systematically recorded and reported through the Integrated Environmental Information System (MOTAT) operated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change. These data are incorporated into the University’s annual Sustainability Reports and reviewed by the Sustainability Commission to evaluate performance. Sakarya University also holds an official Zero Waste Certificate, verifying compliance with national environmental standards and demonstrating effective implementation of disposable reduction practices.
Internal audits are conducted annually to ensure compliance with both the Zero Waste Regulation and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Principles. Preparatory work is underway to achieve full ISO 14001 certification, further embedding continuous environmental improvement into institutional operations.
Through the systematic reduction of disposable materials, the promotion of reusable and biodegradable alternatives, and the integration of measurable reporting mechanisms, Sakarya University demonstrates a strong and verifiable commitment to sustainable consumption and waste minimisation.
This policy demonstrates the University’s strong commitment to circular resource management and directly contributes to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13: Climate Action.
