Carbon Reduction Target

Carbon Reduction Target (Scope 1 & Scope 2)

Sakarya University has established a long-term carbon reduction target covering Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions through 2050, with the objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This target forms part of the University’s broader environmental sustainability strategy and demonstrates its institutional commitment to climate action.

The University’s approach to carbon reduction focuses on the gradual reduction of direct and energy-related emissions through energy efficiency measures, increased use of renewable energy, and continuous monitoring of emissions performance across campus operations.

Sakarya University’s carbon reduction target is aligned with Türkiye’s national climate policies and long-term decarbonization vision. Türkiye ratified the Paris Agreement in 2021 and adopted a national net-zero emissions goal. In this context, the University has publicly committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, covering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, as part of its institutional sustainability strategy.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting

Sakarya University calculates and reports its greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard. Emissions are classified by scope to ensure transparency, consistency and comparability over time.

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from on-site fuel consumption and institution-owned vehicles
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity used in campus operations

For the 2025 reporting year, the University’s total Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 1,694 tCO₂e.
In addition, Scope 3 emissions were estimated at 85 tCO₂e, reflecting other indirect emissions associated with institutional activities.
