2.3.1 Student Food Insecurity and Hunger Intervention Programme

Sakarya University (SAU) implements a Meal Scholarship Programme to reduce the difficulties students may face in accessing adequate and regular meals due to financial constraints. The programme constitutes a regular and coordinated institutional support mechanism aimed at reducing the risk of food insecurity among students through the identification of financial needs, evaluation of applications, selection of eligible beneficiaries, and provision of free meals.

Under the Sakarya University Meal Scholarship Directive, the programme aims to provide free lunch or dinner to academically successful students from low-income backgrounds. It is available to associate, undergraduate, and postgraduate students, helping to reduce the potential adverse effects of financial difficulties on their education.

As outlined on the University's Meal Scholarship Information Page, applications are announced each academic year and submitted through the university's student information system. Applications are evaluated according to established criteria, taking into account household income, family circumstances, and other socioeconomic indicators. This structured process enables the University to identify eligible students and provide targeted food assistance based on financial need.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, meal scholarship applications were accepted through the Sakarya University Information System (SABİS) between 22 September and 1 October 2025. Following the evaluation process, the meal scholarship results were officially announced on 8 October 2025. Eligible students were required to verify their declared information through supporting documentation, reinforcing the transparency and accountability of the programme.

Through its Meal Scholarship Programme, Sakarya University aims to improve students' access to adequate and regular meals, reduce the risk of food insecurity arising from financial hardship, and support the continuity of their education. The programme's implementation each academic year demonstrates the University's sustained and institutionally coordinated approach to addressing student hunger and food insecurity.
