2.5.2 Events for Local Farmers on Sustainable Agriculture

Sakarya University (SAU) supports farmer outreach events, scientific discussions, and workshops organised in collaboration with local stakeholders to improve local farmers' and agricultural producers' knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices, food security, and agricultural production methods. By bringing academic expertise together with local producers, the University contributes to addressing agricultural challenges, promoting sustainable farming methods, and strengthening regional food production.

In this context, on 3 June 2025, a farmer outreach event entitled “How to Combat the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug” was held in Paralı Village, Karasu District, as part of Sakarya University's Science Communication activities, with the support of Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality and the Paralı Village Headman's Office. During the event, Sakarya University faculty members Prof. Dr. Mustafa Zengin and Prof. Dr. Mustafa Arslan met with local farmers to discuss the impact of the brown marmorated stink bug on agricultural crops, its spread, and appropriate pest management methods.

The event provided practical information on the use of pheromone traps, monitoring of pest populations, and effective pest control strategies. Focusing particularly on reducing crop losses in hazelnut, maize, and fruit production, the programme helped raise farmers' awareness of scientifically informed agricultural pest management practices.

Furthermore, in 2025, Sakarya University academics participated in the Sustainable Rural Development Workshop, hosted by Pamukova Municipality, alongside representatives of the Chamber of Agriculture, the District Directorate of Agriculture, and local producers. The workshop addressed Pamukova's agricultural production capacity, existing production challenges, risk management, and sustainable farming practices. Participants discussed potential solutions for integrating scientific methods into agricultural production, promoting modern farming practices, and supporting local producers.

Through these activities, Sakarya University facilitates knowledge exchange and collaboration among local farmers, academics, public institutions, and agricultural sector representatives. Farmer outreach events and multi-stakeholder workshops contribute to promoting sustainable agricultural practices, raising awareness of agricultural production risks, and supporting efforts to strengthen regional food security.
