2.5.1 Access to Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture Knowledge for Local Farmers

Sakarya University (SAU) supports local farmers and agricultural producers in accessing scientific knowledge and technologies related to food security, sustainable agricultural practices, and the protection of agricultural production. By sharing its academic expertise with local producers, the University aims to strengthen agricultural pest management, reduce crop losses, and contribute to the sustainability of regional agricultural production.

In this context, on 3 June 2025, Sakarya University organised a farmer outreach event entitled “How to Combat the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug” in Paralı Village, Karasu District, as part of its Science Communication activities, with the support of Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality and the Paralı Village Headman's Office. During the event, Sakarya University faculty members Prof. Dr. Mustafa Zengin and Prof. Dr. Mustafa Arslan provided local farmers with scientific and practical information about the damage caused by the brown marmorated stink bug to agricultural crops, its spread, and methods for controlling the pest.

The knowledge shared with farmers included the use of pheromone traps, monitoring of pest populations, and identification of appropriate pest management methods. Particular emphasis was placed on controlling this pest, which threatens hazelnut, maize, and fruit production, and providing technical guidance to help farmers reduce agricultural losses. Through this initiative, the University's scientific expertise was translated into practical knowledge addressing challenges faced by local agricultural producers.

This initiative is further supported by research on locally developed pheromone trap technology for controlling the brown marmorated stink bug, conducted by Sakarya University academics. The pheromone traps developed through the University's research aim to reduce crop losses by facilitating pest monitoring and control while limiting reliance on chemical pest management methods. These studies contribute to connecting scientific research outcomes with sustainable agricultural practices.

Furthermore, Sakarya University academics contributed to the Sustainable Rural Development Workshop, held in Pamukova with the participation of local producers and agricultural sector representatives. The workshop provided an opportunity to share knowledge and exchange perspectives on agricultural production capacity, production risks, and sustainable farming practices.

Through direct scientific knowledge sharing with local farmers, technological research on agricultural pest management, and activities involving agricultural producers, Sakarya University facilitates access to knowledge related to food security and sustainable agriculture. These initiatives aim to support informed decision-making among local farmers, reduce agricultural losses, and strengthen the resilience of regional food production.
